Long before Delta 8 THC made its debut to the general public, scientists were studying its effects way back in the 1970s. So, it’s not exactly a “new” cannabinoid, as many people believe. That said, it seems that a few experts and renowned scientists have uncovered some benefits of Delta 8 THC. And guess what? They’re not exactly what you’d expect from a THC variant.

The High from Delta 8 THC

If you’ve never tried Delta 8 THC, then we’re almost certain your first question will be: Does Delta 8 THC Get You High?

Yes, Delta 8 THC will get you high, but the high is far less potent than the high from Delta 9 THC. It’s much more subtle, a little more energetic, and way more calming. Many Delta 8 users report feeling relaxed, with way more mental clarity and focus, and they never feel paranoid like they do when they consume Delta 9 THC.

In fact, even the National Cancer Institute agrees [¹]:

“[Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol] exhibits a lower psychotropic potency than delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC), the primary form of THC found in cannabis.”

And that’s not all…

Scientific Benefits of Delta 8 THC

Since Delta 8 is a variant of regular THC, it holds a lot of therapeutic value. And as it turns out, there are a few published studies that highlight its medicinal properties.

Let’s start from the beginning…

Delta 8 THC and Tumors

Back in 1975, scientists wanted to see what Delta 8 THC would do to Adenocarcinoma tumors on the lungs of rats. Amazingly, they noted a significant size reduction of the tumors.

More studies are needed to confirm these results, but they’re thought-provoking to say the least [²].

Delta 8 THC and Nausea/Vomiting

Then in 1995, researchers decided to give Delta 8 THC to children undergoing intense chemotherapy treatments [³].

As we all know, chemotherapy can cause some pretty severe nausea and vomiting. So scientists gave the children Delta 8 THC, and to their surprise, it had a 100% success rate in reducing their nausea and vomiting symptoms (there were a total of 480 treatments). This is by far the most intriguing Delta 8 THC study to date!

Delta 8 THC and Pain

Four years later, scientists wanted to see Delta 8’s effects on pain. Again using rats, they administered one group with morphine and the other group with Delta 8 THC. The Delta 8 was way more effective in reducing pain [⁴].

While scientists and reputable Delta 8 THC brands aren’t allowed to claim that Delta 8 THC should be used to treat pain, the results of this study are interesting. As always, more studies are needed to confirm these results.

Delta 8 THC and Appetite

Fast-forward to 2004, to when researchers analyzed Delta 8 THC’s effects on food consumption. As it turns out, Delta 8 THC increases appetite far more than Delta 9 THC. This can be viewed as both good and bad, depending on the person and situation. But for scientists, they were excited. They said…

“Delta 8 THC caused increased food consumption and tendency to improve cognitive function, without cannabimimetic side effects. Hence, a low dose of THC might be a potential therapeutic agent in the treatment of weight disorders [⁵].”

While all of these studies are pretty groundbreaking, more studies are needed. Especially regarding Delta 8 THC’s safety profile.

Which brings us to…

Is Delta 8 THC Safe?

It depends on the Delta 8 THC brand you buy from. Reputable Delta 8 THC brands focus on clean extraction, quality ingredients, unbiased third party testing, and label accuracy.

What we know from the studies mentioned above is that no side effects were reported. But keep in mind that scientists only use high quality, pure Delta 8 THC. This is why you should never buy Delta 8 THC from a gas station or smoke shop. Stick to online reputable Delta 8 brands that utilize pure ingredients and third party testing.

Delta 8 THC Benefits: Takeaways

In 2021, scientists conducted an online survey to see why consumers preferred Delta 8 THC over regular Delta 9 THC. They also wanted to learn what people used Delta 8 THC for, and here’s what they learned…

“About half of the participants (51%) used delta-8-THC to treat a range of health and medical conditions, primarily anxiety or panic attacks (69%), stress (52%), depression or bipolar disorder (46%), and chronic pain (41%). Participants compared delta-8-THC very favorably with both delta-9-THC and pharmaceutical drugs and reported substantial levels of substitution for both [⁶].”

While it’s exciting to see more and more people benefiting from Delta 8 THC’s therapeutic properties, we strongly advise you to always use caution. What works for one person, may not work for another person.

Delta 8 THC is a psychoactive cannabinoid, so you’ll likely feel high after taking it. If you’ve only ever consumed CBD, we recommend you start slowly with Delta 8, and with a low dose. And remember: Delta 8 THC is not a “cure-all”. More studies are needed to confirm its therapeutic benefits, but what we know so far is very encouraging.
